Photo Packages and Event Marketing

Sell more, price less: Packages for Pros

This week is pay dirt for Pros. Sell groups of prints and products for totally pain-free purchasing. Packages are here!

Create and configure them from the Pros tab of your Control Panel. Choose your print lab, products, and applicable galleries. Then name your price. When your customers buy one they’ll just need to select their images and check out. Questions? See our full help pages. Did we get it right? Speak your mind on our forums.

Pros please note:

  • The print lab you specify for a package trumps the lab you’ve set in each gallery’s custom pricing. If they are different, a photo ordered through a Bay Photo package will print through Bay, while a regular order from the same gallery could print through EZ Prints.
  • At this time, digital downloads and custom photo cards are not available for purchase through packages.
  • Color correction is currently applied to ALL items ordered through packages. As we improve this feature we’ll let you specify your desired settings, so stay tuned.

Event Marketing and Choosing Favorites

Our Pros have shown us incredible patience through the last year and we hope that this moment has been worth the wait. Introducing Event Marketing and Favorites:

Events are Sharegroups on steroids. Create an Event and assign galleries to it. You get a link to the page to share with any person you wish. They’ll see all of those galleries on one handy page.

Additionally, you can enter a list of key clients (say, the bride). For each Participant you add, we’ll generate a custom version of the page that also contains a Favorites folder specific to them. When each Participant browses those event galleries, they can tag the photos they like best. A copy of each gets placed in that Favorites gallery, and both of you can review their selections at any time.

You can start managing your Events right now from your Pros tab. Visit our full help pages, send your customers to our visitor help, and as always — let us know what you think on our forums.

Last but not least, we brushed up the site with a slew of bug fixes:

  • We tightened up the layout of our recently-added Sales Tax tool, so things should look neater in that space. You can also enter tax rates with up to three decimal places.
  • Keyworders rejoice! Editing keywords now won’t unexpectedly clear them.
  • Keywords links work properly from the lightbox again. (Whoops)
  • Browsing by date on an invalid user’s site now redirects back to our general homepage.
  • Sepia and Tanning Salon are back in service. Find it under your gallery Tools button > Color Effects.
  • We added another great deal on our ClubSmug page for those wanting to try a Showit Website. Log in and check it out!

And a couple updates to our beta Stats feature:

  • Video views are more accurate and are recorded more quickly.
  • Single day views should appear as a dot on the graph.
  • You can now grab a permalink to the page if you’re viewing stats for a single day.

  1. YAHOO! So excited to have all of this in place just in time for the 2010 wedding season. My only problem thus far seems to be getting all of the galleries under a category to show up so I can select one to add to an event.

    1. It seems as though the group has to not be passworded in order to add it to an event. Is that a glitch or any way around it? I have all of my client’s event passworded at their request.

  2. Thank for this feature, It will be set to use for all of my customers galleries. I def see more sales through smugmug now, instead of my reg lab.

    Also will save us lots of time spent sitting around waiting for customers to decide what they will order from our PRE-SOLD PACKAGES. Now They will do that on their own time at their home more comfortable.

  3. Don’t get me wrong – it is great to see all these new features added – keep em coming! But – I just can’t get my head around “color correction enabled for all packages”… Uh, hello – I’m a pro who has adjusted monitors, etc. I correct images for a specific look/feel and color correction can mess up the look I want so I have it turned off. Now, if I use this feature, and a person buys a package and an extra print not in the package ( like buying one more of a print after an order arrives) it may look different as color correction won’t be applied to the extra print. I’m also in technology and can’t understand why orders can’t just be flagged w/ the color correction preference that the pro has chosen.

    I won’t use packages till I know I can turn off color correction, I’m sad to say. Potentially costing me (and Smugmug) some revenue…

      1. I am just starting a business/website and shopping around, currently in the 2 week trial period,so I have things to learn yet about teh capabilities of smmugmug, but I absolutely agree. I take time to adjust each photo and to have a service further that without input from the pro seems very odd to say the least. If I go with this site I certainly would wait for the option to turn color corection off. After all this is my name and business.

  4. @WillShootPhotos – we fully intend (and fast, we hope) to have a toggle for you so that you can choose to have color correction or not. Thanks for the thoughtful comment… hopefully we’ll have this done real soon!

  5. these are all wonderful – if you could just add one more level of separation though – it would be nice to do weddings – couples name – and sub galleries under this..

    1. i second that. i am totally not seeing the benefit yet as it just seems to have just complicated things. without that 3rd level of separation i am stuck with weddings, then wedding events … without a 3rd level i simply have a wedding category full of galleries named “ceremony 001” and “ceremony 002” etc. as well as “formals 001” and “formals 002”, etc. ugh, what an ugly mess.

  6. The latest upgrades rock! The is so much great stuff: Personalized, custom sites, great support, seamless lab integration with every product imaginable. I can’t figure why anyone would want proof and ordering any other way. The new stats tell me exactly which images are viewed most…the list just gets longer.

  7. I have not checked out the packages yet but am very glad to see it in time for the wedding season, Little Leagues, and senior portraits. You guys really mean it when you say it’s “coming soon!” that’s why we will stick with Smug Mug, along with your excellent customer service, to us and “our” customers! Now if WE just had the time to make it work better for us on our end! With the fact that we use so many different printers with different print profiles, your color correction makes it easy for me to use already made files and know that they will come out great every time. Believe me when I say this, it is not true for most color correction options. Every time you offer a new product at a reasonable price, it’s one less place we need to go to for service and product which gives us more time to take pictures! All I need now is more photographers!!

  11. I am so excited about this that I jumped right in and tried to figure a package out… it went easy right up till I was trying to figure out what galleries to include for my package. Not all the galleries showed as an option so only galleries that have pricing already showed up. That is fine I guess, love it. Thank you.

    will know more as I try and add more packages and to more galleries.

  12. This is really cool; however, I noticed some issues when testing in different browsers. Since most people I know use FireFox or Safari, these are not big issues, but I would hate to discourage anyone from buying from me. ;)

    In Opera 10.10, opening the package selection process generates an “Unsupported browser for Scrollbar.watchVisibleContent” error. If you acknowledge the error you can continue.

    In IE 8, cropping a photo generates a Secure content error! “Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?” If you check the yes box you can continue. {Note that IE does offer even less secure modes that this would not apply in.)

    Another thought I had; it would be nice to have a crop change that is applied to the first photo also apply to the remaining ones of the same size. This probably needs discussion as there could be many implications with this.

  13. Would love to see packages of digital file downloads – 5 files, 10 files, 25 files, etc. I have clients looking to download a batch of files but one-off pricing doesn’t really work for that need.

      1. Yes. Digital packaging so I can offer it to those charities / non-profits I work with. Most won’t have funds for prints after paying for my services.

    I have a tremendous amount of galleries
    sometimes I need to move things into different galleries, and it can take forever and sometimes I give up trying to find the certain gallery on the list

    IS THERE ANYWAY POSSIBLE TO ALPHABETIZE THE GALLERY TITLES OR NAMES??

    I wish you could discover how to fix the bug where we have to remove the “remember me” flag every single time we sign on. That improvement would save me a lot of time and plug the big security hole.

  21. Would there be anyway, in the list of items to add, to include what our ala carte customer pricing is? Right now I open in two tabs to see full pricing, which helps me decide how to discount a package price … Thank you for this GREAT feature!

  22. I would love some kind of simple way to offer the package deal to my customers, maybe an email link that takes them directly to the package deal, like some sort of promotion or something. Let them know the package is there without them having to dig for it in the pricing menu.

  23. Very cool. I need to check this out more, but I’m hoping we can download entire folders of favorites back to our desktops rather than one image at a time?

    Also.. what’s the event marketing? I was so hoping for a way to have guests sign up so that I can notify everyone when the gallery is ready to view. Event marketing to me is having event cards available at the wedding that provides a link to guests to go and sign up. I’ve done a work around with signing up for a service, but it’s expensive and yet another middle man. I know smug is totally anti spam but this is such a crucial step in marketing the events to guests.

  24. You guys are awesome! Every time I look at my competitions website, I think to myself, self, I wish I could do that on mine! Then things keep imrpoving here. My personal requests would be a definition of licensing images on prints like the downloads and give the customer the choice to do some of their own effects, ie black and white, a border, text…etc. That would be way cool!

    1. Alisa, those are both great ideas… bulk downloader build into smugmug for people to pick & download a batch of photos (pick size to get hopefully) and letting them do some of the effects on photos before download or printing… both get my vote!

    1. I am awaiting the bulk downloader….. Many of my customers are involved in sporting events and want to download images onto their computer without dealing with prints. They have been greatly disappointed that they have to download images one at a time and I have lost much business because of this. I have had to burn CDs (involving CDs, cases, labels, packaging, and postage) for those customers who are willing to go to the extra effort to mail a payment to me. This is something that many of my international clients aren’t willing to go through, as they have higher postage costs and have to worry about customs charges as well. A bulk downloader will solve these issues and make my customers very happy.

    1. Yes, Smug offers coupons if you have the Pro level subscription. Go to: Tools> Control Panel> the Pro Tab> and Coupons. It’s great.

    One question I have is on the new mobile url. Is there a way to use this on unlisted galleries if you know the regular gallery url? I think this would be very useful for my mobile visitors.

    I agree…Having the option of choosing our own lab would be fantastic! Currently I shut printing off and connect with my clients to find out what they want as far as prints go. I have always used ACI Color Labs and WHCC…Much cheaper and quality is nice…

    1. Yep! Mine is active only for images I sell in general. But for my portraits, I have them go to my paypal account.

  28. I am liking the idea of events. However, I would rather see similar features integrated into galleries, especially the ability to have sub-folders/galleries for a regular gallery. That way I can have a single password-protected, top-level gallery on the home page for my clients to log in and see all their photos sorted by sub-folders (like “getting ready”, “ceremony”, “reception, etc). Having the password-protected entry gallery shown on the home page also allows all other non-event-related prospective clients to get an idea/feel of our studios’ recent happenings, even though they can’t access the galleries (instead of not having something to show on home and only sending page link to the wedding couples and their guests, as in the case for Events).

    Sorry if I am not clear above… basically I am liking the Events module because:
    1. It can have multiple sub-folders/galleries
    2. Clients can choose their favorites
    3. It allows Participants list and promotes interaction

    But I don’t think I will make use of it for clients because:
    1. I can’t display the event with preview thumbnail on home page like galleries
    2. There’s no password protection
    (These are just my assumptions for now.. I am gonna play with it more to find out)

    1. I completely agree. I LOVE the idea of the event marketing and have spent hours trying to make it work for me but it’s too messy at this point in time. A “top-level gallery on the home page for my clients to log in and see all their photos sorted by sub-folders (like “getting ready”, “ceremony”, “reception, etc)” would be perfect. Otherwise we have to create 5-10 galleries just for one wedding. This is added hassle with having to go through and create each gallery. The process is not streamlined. Also, it makes the process of naming galleries a mess. How can we utilize this feature for weddings if we have to create a gallery named “reception” for each wedding we do? How would we differentiate between 47 “reception” gallery’s? I hope I’m making sense here. This is a lot to gripe about but I feel it necessary. Also, lastly, the current event marketing would force my clients to have to type in a password for each and every gallery. This does not seem very customer friendly to me. I’m sorry to complain as I can tell you’ve put much hard work into this but I’m afraid I’m failing to see how it’s suppose to work fluidly. Am I just missing the idea?

    The claim “Designed to help SmugPros make more per event” means nothing if you can’t charge your clients in their own currency. More of nothing is still nothing.

    Smugmug knows this because Non-US based pro’s have been saying so for 3 years (longer?) – selling in US dollars to non-US clients is a huge barrier to sales – yet still nothing changes.

    Will Smugmug treat all “pro” customers equally and simply allow currencies other than US dollars, or will non-US based pros continue to be treated with indifference?

    We love you Smugmug . . . but they way you treat us sometimes . . . it makes us want to cry. [sniffle]

    1. Thomas (post #55), I couldn’t have put it better myself. If you don’t live in the US then the sales feature is next to useless. I have had a pro account for years but sales are next to nothing due to the currency issues… I don’t mind prints and shipping from the US, it’s just the currency!

    1. Same for me. It would be good to have a few European suppliers and more specifically UK suppliers for printing. And to be able to choose from a series of key currencies. For me, living in the UK, I cannot use the print/sales part.

  31. I totally agree, my clients get confused when and why they have to convert from US Dollars to Irish Euros for an Irish Photographer. A simple function whereby the Pro Photographer can switch the pricing to Euros for his/her clients would benefit what is essentially a European service too…it’s not fair that we’re paying for a pro service and only being able to use 3/4 of the applications.

  34. It’s great that your improving the site with package options. My issue with the packages is that I want to offer die cut wallets and buttons for my sports packages. Only Bay Photo offers the die cut and only EZPrints offers buttons. I would use your packages more if I could get both, because currently I just go directly through Bay Photo for my packages that I give directly to my customers(and Bay Photo does have magnets and buttons on their site). It would be nice to have the same package offered directly through me, on my site as well.

  36. Why does Smugmug keep 15% of the profit margin when they’re already setting the base prices higher?

    Example: EZPRINTS 30X45 Mounted Chocolate Framed is $209.95 and Smugmug base price is $289!!!

    Why such a huge markup for what should be wholesale prices for the so-called “PRO” account!
    Plus SmugMug should already be getting Volume Discount prices so base prices should be substantially less than the price my customer can go to EZPRINTS and see. After adding my margin on top of Smugmug ridiculous markups my customer thinks I’m raping them!

    1. I have the same question. There seems to be a disconnect here: 15% profit margin kept AND pricing the base prices higher?

  39. I love the new features. However, I wish it were possible to select images that our customers would like for other products that we sell, like flush mount albums and slideshows. If this option could be added to this “selecting favorites option” that will help greatly! Also, I offer prepaid print credits, it would be cool if my clients could go on my smugmug and place an order for their print credits, by selecting the photos they need and then I can approve their order and the order is deducted from my account thats on file. I know we have coupons but I need the shipping billed to me also. Thanks smugmug!

  43. Great work with the packages and events guys! The manage events UI is really going to help reduce my workload for an upcoming wedding. I would like to ask for two additional features in the next revision:

    “Add to Favorites” button in the slideshow. This is a great new feature, and I’d like it to be as easy to take advantage of as possible.

    Option to save custom text to populate the body of email notifications to participants.

  51. With eleventy billion comments here already, I doubt you’ll read this, but here’s my 2 cents.

    Packages are great. Love the concept, this will really help guide customers to sales!

    However… implementation is kludgey, kludgey, kludgey.

    1. I have no idea how to edit my package once I set it up. Why is there no edit button in the Packages tab?

    2. I can’t even figure out how to delete it. There is no delete button in the Packages tab.

    3. I can’t even figure out how to make a new package. I made this one package, it’s there, but how do I make another?

    4. For a brief moment I recall seeing some kind of “package manager” interface during the process of making the package. I saw this cool little tag and everything. Where is it in the menu system? I have no idea.

    5. When calculating package price, I want to know what it would normally cost the customer… not what the base cost is. If anything, it should have been set up to look for all the modifications to the base cost first, and then show the base cost as a last resort.

  52. LOVE the packages offering. Easy to use and a great sales driver.
    QUESTION:
    I created 3 regular packages and 3 “extra” packages. Then later I decided to add a 4th regular package. But now it lists my packages in the order I created them. Is there a way to re-order the listing so all my regular packages appear together so my customer won’t miss the 4th package?

  54. I guess this is where I have to tell you this officially. Thanks for adding packages, but boy oh boy it is not easy or intuitive to set them up or to make purchases as a client.
    Thank you for adding packages as an option. I have used Miler’s package system in the past and wanted to try your system and see how involved the back end was and how the client interaction went. I utilized it for the first time for my most receipt client’s gymnastics pictures and was thoroughly frustrated and not very excited about doing it again.
    On the back end I wish I could assign which galleries to place package pricing in all at once. Having to go into each package (eight in this case) and add the galleries was slow and tedious.
    From the ordering side, within packages the flow is poor and very slow. Even expanding the thumbnails to 28 images if a client’s picture is at the end it can take dozens of clicks to get there. Also, from the first picture you can’t click left and go backwards to quickly get to the last picture in the gallery. That would cut the clicks in half. Also the “+” to expand the thumbnail screen has no explanation. I stumbled on it thinking it would make the thumbnails bigger.
    From a client’s perspective, they click past a hundred pictures and find their kid, and then they pick the pose they like and and click “BUY”. This pulls down THIS PHOTO, PHOTOS IN THE GALLERY, & PACKAGES. When they click THIS PHOTO there are tabs PRINTS, MERCHANDISE. !!!! This is where the package option needs to be !!!!. As it is now they have to click on PHOTO PACKAGE and then find their picture a second time scrolling and clicking past the same hundred pictures they just plodded through. And if they don’t see or take a chance on the “+” sign they are doing it 8 pictures at a time. When the client is looking at a picture in the gallery and click buy that is the one they want, why send them away?
    Do these ideas make any sense? These are the things that drove me crazy setting this up and checking to make sure everything was set right. I had my wife play and she also hated the package ordering flow.
    Her comment was about having to drag a thumbnail into the package which is displayed by a dozen empty frames. How about dragging the picture into the type of package you want instead of picking the package type first? Also, since I set up my packages to only allow one single pose, what is the point of dragging to populate all the frames? This makes some sense if you allow multiple shots, but is silly for just one.
    A revamp would be nice. Thanks.
