Kevin’s FrankenCamera for high-pixel action

The thing is we have giant walls and we’re kinda bored by static scenes.

What if we want a giant print of fireworks over San Francisco, like this shot we love from Chris Michel, printed BIG!

Creative high-schooler and SmugMug intern Kevin, who dreams of Stanford, did what he does best:  mooch cameras from his friends.  Fire nine of them at the same instant and voila!  Pixels enough for 12-foot prints.

Here ’tis with two cameras firing simultaneously:

So who wants to be part of shooting an epic 12-foot print of Fireworks over San Francisco?  ‘Cus Kevin and I  would like to meet you there so we can mooch your 5D MKII, if you have one.

Got other ideas for an epic big action shot we can take as a group of 5D donors?

If I was in the area, I would love to!

I might pitch in my 5dII and a 85 1.8 lens. are you stitching with ptgui or autopano?

Not sure yet what focal length to use for the fireworks shot. Need to go up there, pick a spot and see.

I’ve been using Autopano for stitching. I have ptgui and like it but I seem to get more stitching errors with it.

Hey Chris, count me in! Just give me some lead time for planning purposes…

    I’d love to join. I’ve got 2 x 5DII, but only 1 x 85mm/1.8.

    Hey Baldy, I’m in.

What about the most iconic of things Californian? Surfing. Or something motor sport related? Something up at Metcalf maybe?

Ian, I like your ideas! I was planning on going out to SCMX (the MX track at the SJ fairgrounds) tomorrow, but it’s going to rain, so the track will be closed. But I want to go out to SCMX on Thursday, if they’re open then, or maybe Metcalf. I like SCMX more for this situation since the jumps and berms are much bigger, plus you can shoot at night under the stadium lighting, which would be really cool since we’re using 5D MkII’s. I also want to go out and shoot kiteboarders north of Santa Cruz, but it may be tricky since they’re so far away, so we’ll need really big lenses. I have a 5D MkII, but no primes. Would love to join in on the fun!

5D’s included too, or only the II’s? Don’t forget that bodies/lenses can be rented for not much $ (or perhaps only for “recognition” and marketing for the rental facility, rather than $).

What was the mechanism that fired off these cameras simultaneously? Can this trigger fire off a dozen cameras, for instance?

I don’t have anything planned for the 4th yet; I’m out of Monterey, but this could be fun. Have you decided where to shoot from?

I have a 5DII, the 50mm f1.4 and the 100mm f2.8 macro for primes. This might be the reason I need to go get the 85mm f1.2?

I would love to be part of something this cool…
Not sure I will have the focal lengh you need, all depending what you decide.
Feel free to count me “in” if I cant make it to SF then via UPS or Fedex for sure, I assume anything will be replaced due to accident??

Fantastic image! If you ever find yourself in the Milwaukee, I could contribute my 5D Mk. II and/or 30D and/or Rebel XT.

Don’t quite have the same glass, but you could use…
    70-200mm f2.8
    50mm f1.8
    24-105mm f4
    LensBaby 3G
    28-80mm f3.5/5.6

Keep up the fantastic work! This is awesome… especially for the age of the photographer! I’ll keep my eyes peeled for some mind-blowing work to come.
