Google Analytics, New Upload Button and bug fixes

We’ve got a few goodies to share with you this week:

Google Analytics for All

In the old days, getting Google to track your website’s stats required Advanced Customization and was only available for Power Users and Pros. Those days are over.

Google Analytics reports

Check your Control Panel and see a brand new box in your Settings tab. Drop your Google-provided Web Property ID in that box and boom! You’re ready to go.

You’ll still need to open a Google Analytics profile for your site but they’ll provide you with that number, which starts with a “UA” and contains dashes and several digits.

Lots of you may be asking, “Great! Can I switch?” Of course, but just remember to remove your old footer code first.

Button Swap

Since so many Smuggers put more than just photos into their galleries, we swapped our “Add Photos” button for one stamped with a classic, familiar “Upload.” No matter what it says, remember that it’s your starting point when you have photos, movies, or files to move in to your galleries.

Upload files

Three bug fixes:

  • Switching off Photoranking in the gallery settings should now instantly remove your photos from the Popular Photos box. No more jiggling required.
  • The watermarking Fade slider was being a bit slippery if you  were using Safari. Use it again…without the little green button running away.
  • Tweak for Pros: We now accept dashes ( – ) in your account number if your bank’s format contains them. If you want to check or change this, your Tax & Payment info is found in your Control Panel’s Pros tab. All about reporting.

Happy Analyzing and uploading!

All the best,

The SmugMug family

I LOVE the implementation of Google Analytics – well done, Smuggers!

Great, I’m glad there is a solution to this problem. My analytics script has been out of commission without warning for the last 2 months and I’ve wasted 4 hours trying to get them back into the footer with an updated script, but they are still not returning results. I’ve just entered my tracking into the system, I’ll let you know if they start working again tomorrow.

Great, thanks for the continual updating. If I “switch” over to this analytics, will I lose my history that I currently have in Google Analytics?

    @ Randy – No.

I just installed this and Analytics says tracking is not installed.

Q1. Does it take a while to propagate through the site so Analytics picks it up?
Q2. Could it be because I’m using my own URL instead of a smugmug.com URL? I’ve added my site name in the URL field of this form so you can check it out.

Let me know if you need any more info.

    thanks,
    paul

Great stuff! I’ve using GA and have now put my GA ID into SmugMug and deleted the footer code. However, one thing concerns me. I had the code amended to ensure that my own visits are not recorded but that code is now gone. Does the SmugMug arrangement filter out site owner visits?

Hi, I have two smugmug pro accounts and have analytics running with both of them before this release. I did not change anything but suddenly since 21. May my stats have gone crazy on both of my pro accounts. I have had hundreds of visits of direct traffic in one day and continue to have an very unusual amount of direct traffic on both accounts. Is there a bug in the system?

    Thanks!

I have the same problem than Jan. Since the new release, each page visited counts like one unique visitor.

Hey guys, we had a bug that snuck out that was counting each pageview as a new visit on custom domains. It was fixed monday night (may 24) so your stats from tuesday on should be back to normal. New visits will still be high for the next few days but should return to normal shortly. Thanks for your patience.

      new visitors, not new visits.

Before I make the changeover, can you confirm that the nicenames are being used? Previously, I had to hack the code to have smugmug send the nicename strings to GA. Otherwise, I had a bunch of gallery/ADASDA&DF/DFDSF&-caafrea entries.
