Bulk Gallery Downloads, New Trial, Monthly Subscriptions, PhotoFusion tour and bug fixes

Although things got quiet on the outside, the SmugElves have been feverishly busy since we posted last. We hope you love the goodies we’re shipping tonight.

Backups: Bulk Owner Save for Galleries

Yeah, you heard that right. One of the most-requested features we’ve gotten was for Smuggers to be able to zip up and download whole galleries… without using a third party application.

That time has come! Find it in your gallery Tools menu, under Download All. They work similarly to the bulk order downloads we recently debuted.

  • Everything in the gallery will be zipped up: photos, videos, SmugVault files and collected photos if you own them, too.
  • We’ll send you an email containing a link to the zip file. It’s good for two weeks, but if you don’t get to it in time, just go back to the gallery and request a new one.
  • Files 200 MB and larger may follow along in separate emails, so keep your eyes peeled.

You can use this feature to make backups of your own work. Pros might love it to burn CDs of photo shoots for their clients. Just remember that the zip file is not locked with a password and can be opened by anyone who gets the link. Be aware when you share!  Read all about it here.

Got Questions? We’ve got answers.

New Trial for New Smuggers

We’ve been polishing up our signup process so that it matches our recently-updated homepage. Now, all trial accounts will launch at the Pro level to give folks a chance to test drive the full range of our features.

We also renamed our Standard accounts Basic accounts, while we were already in there making changes.

After your trial is over you’ll see the subscription signup process is a lot friendlier, giving newbies the chance to review what features they used and base their decision on their needs.

You can also sign up using your Facebook login info if you like to keep things simple. Existing SmugMuggers can link their account to their Facebook ID, so look here for more info. The catch: Right now, all third party applications like MacDaddy, Lightroom, Star Explorer, etc will require you to use your SmugMug login credentials.

Go ahead and tell your friends about us so they can witness the awesomeness on their own. Or start a new trial yourself… just to see.

Monthly Subscriptions

Over the years we’ve gotten a lot of feedback from people who wanted to be Smug but didn’t want to renew their account in one lump sum. We heard ya.

Sign up in small chunks and we’ll bill you on a month-by-month basis. We won’t bug you with renewals unless we sense something’s funky with your account, or if you’ve piled up enough referral credits to get your next month for free.

Burning answers to burning questions:

  • Discount coupons will be distributed across the first 12 payments (your first year).
  • Referral credits will apply to your total, any excess rolling over to the following month’s renewal.
  • You can’t yet switch between annual and monthly renewals. But stay tuned!

If you need more details, our account billing page has been updated with this shiny new info.

Who is SmugMug?

If you’ve ever wondered who we are and what we’re about, maybe this will help:

Award-winning videographer Anton Lorimer put this incredible piece together to give you a behind-the-scenes look at us, our mission and how we roll.

View it (and share it) from our updated Pro marketing page. Enjoy! We sure did.

Bug fixes

  • We strengthened our Stats a bit by making sure that we don’t remove hit counts when you delete images. They’re still valid numbers. We also cleaned up the interface so only the galleries that registered hits for the date range will show.
  • We squished a card creator bug so you can always browse other photos in the gallery and use them in your cards. Design away!
  • For our holiday early birds, we’ve got 2010-dated holiday cards now for this holiday season. Check ‘em out in the card builder now.
  • By popular demand, our slideshow viewing style now has a transparent background so you can stretch your browser as large as you like.
  • You can create new galleries without hiccups or holdups. Pros with lots of priced galleries were seeing some slowness there before.
  • Watch the messages in your upload log. They should be clearer so you know why your files did or didn’t show up.

That’s it for now. As always, our ears are perked for your thoughts, feedback and suggestions.

All the best,

The SmugMug Family

    Hello.

As a professional photography I love Smug Mug.

Thank you sooo much for making these updates available and I am looking forward to hearing more.

Some nice updates! Any chance we’ll see some home page updates? Like bigger gallery thumbnails? Been waiting 3+ years for that… :-)

Quick Q: can I allow customers to bulk download? I regularly put their images in a password protected gallery and would like to let them snag ‘em all. It would save me time from having to send them a CD or upload the zip elsewhere.

    • October 1, 2010 at 8:38 am

Here is the deal!! When you click on ‘Download All’, you’ll receive an email w/ with a link to the zip file. All you have to do is share this email with your customers. Upon clicking on the link in the email, they’ll get the gallery zip downloaded to their computer. Voila!

Note that if your gallery is too big, we’ll send you a few emails w/ links to multiple zip files. Make sure you send them all to your customers!

Let us know if you have any additional questions,

      Frederique

    Thanx guys, you guys rock!

  7. October 1, 2010 at 8:20 am

The bulk download feature is fantastic! Thank you so much!

  8. October 1, 2010 at 8:24 am

It’s wonderful that you guys keep on adding new requested features, Thank you.

Regarding bulk downloads, I second Daniel’s comment. I was really hoping for bulk customer downloads (for free not purchase) so that I don’t have to send out a CD. Also sending out the zip file via email would probably not work since the attachment will be too large.

When would I used this? Well I shoot many photos for the soccer team or for elementary school. I share these galleries with the parents. My intent is not to charge for these photos (at least for the smaller size). They can certainly download these pictures one by one, however, it will be very useful if the parents can download an entire album in one shot without involving me. For example, say the maximum photo view size for a gallery is set to X2. The download feature will download all of the photos in that gallery at the X2 size but not the original size.

Thanks again…. for all your hard work.

      Hi atmtx,

We got you covered!! No need to send an email with a very big zip file to your customers. All you have to do is a ‘Download All’ of your gallery. You’ll receive an email w/ with a link to the zip file. Share this email with your customers, and upon clicking on the link in the email, they’ll get the gallery zip downloaded to their computer. Voila!

      Have a great weekend,

      Frederique

Bulk downloads – so, so thrilled! You guys answered my prayers! (Well, since I’m a secular person, my oft-repeated fervent requests!) I can’t wait to try this out. Thank you. And thank you.

Thanks for some of the new feature additions – especially bulk downloads …

I have one question – how do i download the pictures of a specific keyword .. currently that is something very much useful – because if i want to do a prints of those pics at my local store, it is kind of difficult – i go through few steps using different browser plugins to download the same ..

once again thanks for the new features.

Hi Siva, great question. Use our Smart Gallery feature, collect those photos into a gallery, and then download them :) More help: http://www.smugmug.com/help/smart-galleries and of course, holler to our Support Heroes if you have more questions! http://smugmug.com/help/emailreal

Andy, thanks for the solution – yes it solves the problem – but it is a little longer process.

My process currently – take the keyword feed in Firefox browser and use downthemall add-in – main advantage – it is instant – and pick and choose what size i want ..

Download feature works as advertised and very appreciated. Too bad you had to cut the demo’s back to 14 days from 30 – not enough time for many – but I understand there are abusers out there.

  13. October 1, 2010 at 4:45 pm

Hey Bob, our Trials have always been for 14 days :) Sorry for any misunderstanding!

Smug Mug.. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways… starting with bulk downloads! You guys are awesome!

Thanks for finally creating a “download all” feature!

But even though the link is shareable, what you created isn’t what most people requested in the “enable bulk gallery downloading” request at the uservoice site.
If you take a look at the 50 or so comments there, nobody mentioned they wanted a backup option for their own(it isn’t mentioned once). They wanted visitors to be able to bulk download whole galleries or a set of photos.
I don’t like to complaint about things, especially to developers who do a great job.
Like most folks in the request post wrote, I just want a way for my parents, friends and relatives to download more than one photo at a time.
It would be a lot more convinient if they could just get the file themselves. The albums I want people to be able to download form I only have as hidden in sharegroups, so just having this feature in the sharegroups would be enough for me.

If you don’t have any plans to make this, just tell us, but then I think you should re-open the post at uservoice, since it isn’t actually completed :)

Awesome! Been waiting for this. You guys are the best.

I have to agree with Kjetil – I was hoping for a way for customers to bulk download a gallery on demand. I shoot a lot of high school events (as a parent) and make the pictures available to families for download or print. It would be nice for them to download a gallery or keyword gallery (eg. all pictures containing their child) when they want. I’m accumulating multiple years across many sports and music events, so downloading every gallery might not work for each family (thus the keyword gallery download).

Why not give owners the option on each gallery to let customers create the zip files, and then still keep the zip files around for two weeks – that way they could be reused by other customers if they ask to bulk download the same gallery? If another customer requests a zip file and they are already created, just send them the same zip file links.

    Thanks!
