Smug Tip of the Week: Events and Favorites
Is there a way to let my clients pick their favorite photos?
We hear this a lot from inquiring Pros and the answer is a hearty YES!
Here’s how:
1) Go to your Control Panel and set up an Event. You can customize it lots of ways and then add the gallery (or galleries) that you want to share with your fans.

2) Name your client as a Participant. This grants them a special access to view the event via a special link.

3) Ask them to view that link. When they see a pic they love, they can click the red “heart” icon to add it to a private Favorites gallery that only the two of you can see.

4) From there, they can share their Favorites gallery with friends and family and (best of all) buy prints and gifts.

If you want to get fancy, click the white envelope next to their name to open the email share feature and use our templates to spread the word about your Event. We make it easy to tailor your message to the event and save the wording for future shoots.
Get all the details on how to use Events and Favorites on our Event Marketing help page.
Tip: If you have Photo Ranking enabled, they may be tempted to click the green or red thumbs-up icon that appears on the mouseover bar. But keep in mind that it’s part of your Popular Photos feature and we don’t recommend this as a replacement for Favorites. You won’t be able to see the vote count, but check your Popular Photos box to see the best ones!
Enjoy and happy marketing!

Never realised you could do this, great way for clients to choose album pics. Thanks
Love it and I knew of it, just haven’t used it yet. I need to know more about the difference between participants and registered guests.
Yeah! This is exactly what I need for my sister to help choose pictures for our Italy book!! Thank you!!
I use this all the time to gather feedback for wedding album design. Clients love it.
I’ve been trying to use this feature for a while – I don’t know why people can’t select their favorite photos from my regular galleries. It’s very limiting because I have to invite people to smugmug with their email, but what if I have a wedding guest who wants to select her fav photos and show me. She can’t, because I can’t see her selections without personally inviting her with an email.
I’m fairly certain you can checkmark a box that allows the public to create a personal account to track their favorites. Then, you log in and go to the event and you can see her in the list. I think this can work on all galleries you create Events for including your regular galleries (not sure what the difference is).
Why can’t we do this with a regular album without having to create an event?
Choosing photos for the album is great. But can you devise a way I can then download those selected images just like the download all tool?
People picking their favorites is great, love the theory behind the idea.
Events though – they get in the way. Registration is something people don’t get, don’t do, don’t understand. I’d love to see a way to let people use their FB login, Twitter login or WP login (oh, I dunno, kind of like these blogs comments do), then pick their favorites in regular galleries.
*That* would be a useful feature.
CMAC: I’ve tried contacting the support heros, but invariably get the dismissive 1-2 punch that goes like “this is how it works” and “go to uservoice and add your feedback. However, I have an issue with Events that isn’t a feature request and more like a fix request. The issue is that adding Favorites is easy, clicking to see the shots you’ve selected as Favorites is easy, BUT getting BACK to the full gallery to make more selections is NOT EASY. There’s no link to jump back. Support hero says “tell your clients to hit the back button. that’s how it works”. In reality, with the way the URI state is updated with each image click, if my client moves through 30 images in the “favorites” view, they have to click the back button 31 times to get back to the “full gallery” view. Not cool, man, not cool. Can I get a CMAC in on this?
