Be Social: Improvements and Bug Fixes

We know how much you Smuggers love sharing pics on social sites, and we love making it easy for you to do. After all the great feedback we’ve gotten from you on our forums, Facebook and Twitter, we have a few more improvements to our Be Social feature.

New Quick Share Button

New Facebook Share button for instant access to the Facebook panel in Be Social. Look for it under any photo, next to the other Quick Share buttons:

Owner Share for Gallery Owners

The Share button will read “Owner Share” to logged-in account owners if you’ve disabled Easy Sharing in your gallery settings:

This is an awesome feature that lets you tout your site even when others can’t.

Tumblr, Two Ways

You can now post two different ways to Tumblr: Article and Photo. If you choose “Article”, you can adjust the layout and formatting of your post from Be Social’s Advanced Settings:

Add Keywords to Tag Your Posts

A new keywords field appears for WordPress, Tumblr and Posterous if you have keywords enabled in the gallery:

Refinements and Bug Fixes

We have a few smaller improvements to Be Social, including:

  • You can opt to show or hide Location settings when posting to Twitter.
  • Ability for UTF-8 characters to be posted to Facebook.

And a couple of bug fixes, too:

  • Our link shortener had some trouble with links containing UTF-8 characters. No more!
  • We no longer reveal your HTML and script code in the gallery description.

Hot tip: Remember that applying a viewing password to your gallery will hide the Be Social feature from the Share button. Certain features will also be disabled if you’ve turned off External Linking, so check your gallery settings if something doesn’t look right. Note that you can also completely disable the Quick Share buttons in your Control Panel.

As always, let us know what you think!

    Will sharing now be enabled even if a gallery is password protected?

    • April 11, 2011 at 1:34 pm | #2

      Sorry Kerri, but not at this time. I would suggest adding it to our feedback forum so that other users can vote it up, and so that we can monitor the request. You can add it here:

      Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Love, Love, LOVE the new tumblr option. Thank you! One big issue for me, however, is that I have two tumblr accounts associated with the same email and when I use the new feature, it posts to one but not the other. Not sure if there’s anything you could do about that, but I’d love it if you could.

      Marissa, We’ve received a few requests for being able to add multiple accounts, and it’s definitely something we’re considering for the future. We want to make posting your photos to as many places as possible, as easy as possible!

    am little confused, as much as I want to make the site social, why are we calling this facebook share (With the logo) when the button actually allows u to post to other services too including facebook and twit …

    second – this might be a dumb questions is there a diff between using the tweet / like and this this share button ?

    • April 11, 2011 at 1:25 pm | #11

      The button should open up with Facebook pre-selected in the Be Social window. At this time we don’t only show the Facebook posting option because most of our users jump between the various services and post to more than one. So the nice part of it is that although the user may go there to initially post to Facebook, you should find that they will post to other services as well. Making it a dedicated Facebook share button was a very long standing feature request since people browsing the galleries wanted a 1 click way to be able to share photos on Facebook without having to navigate the share menu.

      The Tweet button, will allow you (or anyone) to quickly post a tweet on a photo. The Like button posts to your wall that you liked a photo, and your facebook friends will then also have the ability to like it. The BeSocial interface provides you with more formatting and posting options, as well as giving you the option to store your login data, so that you don’t have to re-login each time.

      Let me know if you have any more questions, or if I can be of any more help.

        Thanks for the reply Scott. Was just worried that my visitor might be little confused with two FB photos below all the photos. Is there a way to optionally enable / disable each of these three buttons separately. Say can I just have FB Share (with other services hidden behind the click) and the Tweet button ?

      Sathya, if you’re a Power or Pro user, you can use the advanced customization to hide the Facebook Share button. You’d just need to add this to the CSS Box: #qsFacebookShareButton{display:none;}

      I’ll add in support so that you can hide the other buttons as well, and let you know when it’s live.

        Thanks Scott. Appreciate the response and the effort to provide the option !!!

      Hey Sathya, I didn’t want you to think I forgot about you. I added those other tags in, so you can now hide all 3 buttons. Just use the below code:

      #qsFacebookShareButton{display:none;}
      #qsTwitterShareButton{display:none;}
      #qsFacebookLikeButton{display:none;}

      Let me know if I can be of any further help!
