SmugVault Pricing Falls Further
We’ve once again slashed SmugVault pricing to the floor.
This news comes soon after we upped the limit on your video files. Since big files and archiving go hand in hand, we thought it’d be nice to make it cheaper than ever to backup your original videos in your SmugVault.
Here’s the spiel:
- We dropped the storage fees from $.14/GB/month to $.125/GB/month – that’s cheaper than what you’d get through Amazon S3!
- We nuked uploading fees to your Vault. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
- Downloading from the Vault back to your computer is now just $.12/GB, not $.16/GB.
- SmugVaults can hold files up to 3 GB apiece, in virtually any format.
We’ve said it a lot, but Amazon S3 is the gold standard in internet storage and they’re the brawn behind SmugVault. Anything you archive in your Vault has 99.999999999% durability. In other words, if you store 10,000 files in your SmugVault, on average, we’ll lose just one every 10 million years.
Think you’ll live that long?
You can view Amazon’s Simple Storage Service pricing here.
Set Your SmugVault Settings
Also remember that we do process all display copies of your SmugMug videos and we don’t store your unprocessed original video files in your SmugVault until you enable it. So make sure you open your SmugVault settings and choose “Archive Videos” to take advantage of the safest backup imaginable.
Finally, keep in mind that any files you archive in your SmugVault are visible (and retrievable) just to you, the logged-in account owner.
Fire, flood, ninja attacks… there’s a million reasons why we love SmugVault and think it’s way safer than keeping files on your computer.
More about the incredible, indelible SmugVault:

This is awesome. I want to start using my SmugVault more, but it is a pain to load a ton of images up. Can the Lightroom 3 plugin upload images to a SmugVault account? If not, it would be a very cool feature to add.
Hi Mobiius, you should be able to add RAW files or whatever else you’ve got to your Vault via Lightroom. You may need to change the file format that you export in your Publish settings, but give it a try.
Perfect! Thanks. I tried it out and everything is working. Time to load 50 gigs of photos:)
Smugmug team, “Thank you’ll live that long?” should be “Think you’ll live that long?”
Whoops! Thanks for the eagle eyes, Walter. That typo obviously slipped through the cracks.
can we show clients out vault? I wish there was a way to have my clients pick the RAW files they want edited instead of me wasting SO MANY hours editing and then of course they never pic those to buy:(
Hi Leah, the Vault is for your archives and so your visitors can’t see your files or be able to download them like you can.
However in the case of RAW files, you can choose to have a JPG preview image made so that you can identify the pic. Your clients can see those, so you can upload a whole bunch of RAW files into a gallery and still give your client the link. We completely understand wanting you to save time editing and the Vault is great for that.
Hope this helps!
Thank you for the info…but is there a way for me to know which ones they want edited (same problem when I make albums for them, they have to write 100 numbers down and email or scan the list to me).
OMG Leah you really spelled out one of the big frustrations with being a photog these days.
Leah and Rebecka, you can have your clients use our Favorites feature to highlight the ones they like, and then simply replace them with the edited photos.

Alternatively, you could use Proof Delay after they’ve made a purchase. Tons of customers do it one way or the other – both work!
Leah, try the Event Gallery feature – works great. You establish a gallery, they can go in and choose their favorites which populate a “favorites” gallery that you can see.
This sounds interesting but confusing at the same time.
Can you please tell me the estimate if I wanted to upload 50GB of RAW and access them and store them in the Vault, how much would that cost me a month ?
I tried using the Amazon calculator, but I’m lost.
Thanks, Ljupco
Hi Ljupco, and no problem. Here’s a breakdown:
If you upload 50GB worth of files into your Vault, the upload is free. You’ll incur $6.25 of storage fees for the one month, plus the $1 recurring monthly charge. So if you just upload them and keep them there, your total would be $7.25.
However, if you decide you need to download all 50GB back to your computer that same month, you’ll have to tack on an additional $6.00 for the download fees, bringing your monthly total to $13.25.
Hope this helps!
That sounds good and reasonable price. Now If only you could offer a trial period or 500MB of free storage for the users to “feel” the Vault, that would be nice.
I’d like to make sure that the interface and my workflow get more efficient or the same as now before I put all my HDD’s to rest.
Thanks, Ljupco
I just started using Smugmug, so I’m confused – what is the difference between Smugmug and SmugVault? Should I be using both?
Hi Jess, that’s a valid question. If you upload just JPG, PNG and GIF files (and videos that meet our 20 minute/3GB limit) then you probably won’t need a SmugVault. Your regular SmugMug galleries will be just fine.
However if you want to archive other files like PDFs, RAW, DOC, TIFF, things like that and aren’t comfortable having them sit on your hard drive, then you may want to consider a SmugVault. Check out the links above for more details if you haven’t already.. it’s a great way to have peace of mind storing files you can’t normally upload into your SmugMug account, in the familiar interface of your galleries.
this is good news and I want to use this service but I, like most pros, live in the TB world now. The per TB cost/yr is still too high for a small business like mine. My backup system is still much less expensive so I look forward to a time where costs are comparable so l can jump on board.
Hi Leah, that’s kind of a different issue! If you’ve got a Pro account we highly recommend our Events feature, which allows your client to click and tag their Favorites from the galleries you assign to them. Check out this feature here and let us know if you have questions:

i know, sorry…I just tried to get it in while I had someone listening:) Thanks for the info…this may hopefully be a BIG game-changer!!!! Oh, I am pro and when I tried to “restart” my account, it took me to the Amazon link. So, how do I cancel that and re-up with you guys??
Hi again Leah, I checked up on your SmugMug account and I didn’t see that you were up for renewal yet. The next time you’re due should be April of 2012. If you’re still having trouble can you shoot our Heroes an email? help@smugmug.com
I need to understand something – do I need vault when I am already a smugmug customer? – I’m one level up from basic. I think everything I have on public display is already backed up.
Thanks, -Ken
Hi Ken, if you just upload videos, JPGs, PNGs and GIFs then you probably won’t need a SmugVault, since those files will upload just fine into your SmugMug galleries. The Vault is best if you want to archive other file types like RAWs, TIFFs, PSDs and the like.
And yes, everything you already upload to SmugMug is always retrievable back to your computer any time you need them. No extra charge for that!
Sure thing – set up an event and then they can pick faves

Can you put those prices in perspective?
What would it cost to upload and store 500 gigs, or even a terabyte of files per month?
Hi Paul, since uploading to your Vault is now free, you only have to consider the $1 per month recurring charge and the $.125 per GB. So for 500 GB it would come to $62.50 + $1, or $63.50 .
That’s for the first month of upload + storage. If you don’t need to download them that month then that’ll be the total. But if you do need to download all 500GB back to your computer, then you’d have to consider the $.12/GB download charge, too. Hope this helps!
The issue I see with this program is that now I have to maintain another account with Amazon. Why not hook it up into the SmugMug account? Will the average mainstream Internet user want to go through the hassle to open up an Amazon account? SmugMug is all about easy but this seems like a small pain in the neck.
[...] The idea is simple and could be a great way to boost SmugMug even further up the charts. How many times do you upload a jpg file but have a raw file as well. What about videos that you compress for uploading but want to store the uncompressed raw files somewhere. This is what SmugVault is all about. Any file type can be stored on SmugVault including document files. They have created a Web interface for browsing the files stored in the SmugVault.[...]
I am trying to understand the vault, so if I am a pro users and just post jpgs then those images are archived, but lets say I want to upload any weddings I do for the month so the RAW files are safe and secure while I edit them on my end(just incase something should happen to my computer) the RAW files would be safe? I would most likely never have to download them back to my computer. If something happened o this computer can I down load to any computer? Also when I don’t need them up there any longer would I just delete?
Thanks for your help!
Missy
Hi Missy, that sounds like a workflow that we’ve recommended in the past. You sure can upload your RAW files directly into your Vault and we’ll automatically make JPG versions that your clients can view and buy. When their orders hit Proof Delay, you can swap them with edited versions. This way you only have to edit a few images, not the whole set. (Just keep in mind that if they purchase digital downloads, those will be available right away.)
And yes, the RAW files are safely backed up and you can re-download them to any other computer if you wish. If you change your mind, it’s easy to delete the files in your Vault.
Hope this helps! Let us know if you have other questions: help@smugmug.com
Amazon S3 is a pretty cool technology, and I’m glad to see it implemented with smugmug. Makes the whole photography workflow a bit easier. I generally just do manual backups, which I’m not the best at keeping organized.
