Welcome news, to be certain, and second only to today’s Supreme Court decision in import. Thanks to Team SmugMug for taking the hint and being pro-active. One of the innumerable things to love SmugMug for. I’ll try to keep this in mind on Valentine’s Day. Would a dozen long-stem, Grade A red roses suffice? To whom should they sent. Schmoo, I’m guessing

Hi Thomas! Actually, it’s Sorcerer Emily Chen, Product Manager Miikka Skaffari, and Designer Duc Le. Thanks for the kind words, I’m making sure they see this! :D

    Great stuff! Thanks!

You’re right I was used to th old one but I really like this new lay out. Good job!

Have you fixed stats so you can exclude galleries that are used for website elements (like backgrounds, icons etc)? I have received several acknowledgements that the lack of this feature makes stats worthless for anyone with a customised website but never a suggestion it will be fixed…

Nice Job! Really an big improvement!

Little confused about bit.ly Pro Account.. do I need to fill both API Key and API Login? I found the Key but not sure of what Login to enter.

    • June 28, 2012 at 5:06 pm | #7

You’ll have to enter bit.ly username. We’ll clarify the fields. Thanks for the note

Hey guys, how about giving us an option for the password protected “vault” graphic and let us use a “wrapper and bow” one! Many of our galleries should be seen as gifts rather than locked vaults. Brides can open their galleries that have a bow on it?

I like this suggestion, but what I do currently to get around the safe is to pick a single favorite in the locked gallery and “feature” said image. It then replaces the safe with a thumbnail of that one image.

      • July 3, 2012 at 11:18 am | #11

That’s cool! I did not know that. Great little tip on the feature photo.

Also, I’m with jay on the Lock. Kind of puts a barrier rather than an invitation.

/smh. appreciated change? sure why not.
lots of other features to add over fixing something that is working? yes

Hi! Where is the ‘create an event’ button? =)

    • June 29, 2012 at 11:59 am | #17

Hi Pablo, Events are a marketing feature for Pros, so you’ll find it under Business > Making Money. Hope this helps!

  11. June 28, 2012 at 6:11 pm | #18

This makes me VERY happy!!! Thanks SmugMug team!

  12. June 28, 2012 at 6:30 pm | #19

Where is the create event button? Too simple, stripped all the features that felt like I had control over the account. Give us the old version until you get the control panel fully flushed out.

  13. June 28, 2012 at 6:32 pm | #20

Ahhh found it:) Under business. All is right with the world:)

  14. June 28, 2012 at 6:33 pm | #21

Hmmm….bucking the trend here….I don’t really like the change much. I REALLY don’t like that I have to log in again to get to account settings. It takes more clicks to get to what I want. I didn’t have any complaints with the old control panel, but the new version is just not for me. Yuk.

    • June 29, 2012 at 11:10 am | #22

I am having the same problem. I have

    • July 6, 2012 at 8:48 am | #23

Same problem. In the past I could check stats with a few clicks — now is 6 or 7 including ANOTHER log in. Other than that the new system is slick.

      • July 6, 2012 at 10:27 am | #24

I should have read further. The solution is to log in, then hit a bookmarked link of your stats page. Pop. There are the stats. Two clicks !!

        John

      • July 6, 2012 at 12:00 pm | #25

        Hi John,
You are all set until you exit out of your browser. The next time you start it up, you’ll have to do the verify login page again. If you look for Andy Williams’ reply about using a bookmark, you can avoid the login page and still get to your stats fairly quickly.

  15. June 28, 2012 at 6:33 pm | #26

    Hi Guys

Nice front end makeover, but why not improve the Stats so that we can have total hits since we joined Smugmug, hits for each year, and hits for each month immediately without having to manipulate the dates every time we enter the Stats section.

It would also be nice to have an option to include those stats we select on our front page (i.e an automatically updated process).

    • July 1, 2012 at 4:02 pm | #27

I, too, would like to see that option. It’s something I miss from when I used Fotopic.

      • July 1, 2012 at 5:10 pm | #28

I agree with derek & david. That would be very nice and easy for SM to provide.

Great improvement. Much more intuitive. Thanks.

  17. June 28, 2012 at 9:33 pm | #30

This is a big improvement, thanks!

One thing I would like – seeing as, being a customer, I can never be totally happy :) – is a way to more easily manage categories and subcategories. It needs to be a way that we can see all our current categories listed on one page, perhaps expanding into subcategories. The actual system is excellent – it’s just the management of them which I find difficult when trying to get myself organised.

  18. June 28, 2012 at 10:18 pm | #31

    Great improvement. Nice and clean.

  19. June 28, 2012 at 10:22 pm | #32

My entry to Smugmug is diverted to this announcement and I cannot get to my page! Moreover the new Settings layout follows the current fashion of thinking icons are so much more preferable to text choices since they look so much cleaner etc but I wonder if when I actually am enabled to get there, which I cannot at the moment, if the meaning is obscured as usual in these cases of “upgrading”, which means one has to think each time one chooses until one builds new reflexes. I suspect this is the case just judging from the list on this page:
    Me: You and your subscription.
Privacy: Who can see your site.
    Style: How your site looks.
    Discovery: Search engines, sharing stuff.
    Stats: Nitty-gritty numbers.
    Business: Everything e-commerce. (Pros only)
It seems clear that Me would be better labeled You, That Style would be better labeled Looks or Appearance, that Discovery would be better labeled Search, Stats better labeled Numbers, and Business better labeled Sales.
SmuMug always has written text according to common sense and without inherent promotion and propaganda, but it seems that it is now falling victim to the syndrome of improving things by asking a team to improve the “design”, when the qualifications of the team rarely include understanding simplicity and speed of recognition of labels.
Let’s see. But it occurs to one – does no one ever think of asking a journalist or a team of journalists to advise the “designers”? That is the journalists career specialty, after all – making things very quick and easy to understand. Apparently noone thinks of that, and so the “improvements” often disrupt reflexes built up over time which have to be relearned in a new direction. But of course it all looks so much “cleaner”.
Add order to the menu tree yes but don’t add icons without very good instantly self explanatory labels. And what about the real need of SmugMug, which is bigger and better designs for photo and video banks as blogs, which is surely the future of blogging – covering topics and events where many photos can be attached each with captions, and videos too, plus text for the whole story, which is one of the great possibilities that SmugMug already allows one to do, though as yet not in a really powerful way. I believe if SmugMug developed more powerful blogging themes and layout it could displace WordPress!

    June 28, 2012 at 11:11 pm | #33

Great Job! Now if you can get rid of the awful MapQuest maps, reinstate Google Maps that would be awesome.

  21. June 29, 2012 at 12:28 am | #34

‘Account Settings’ suggests only part of what this actually is: a ‘Control Panel’ that has ‘Account Settings’ as one of its parts.

  22. June 29, 2012 at 12:35 am | #35

It would also help if you could remove the remnants of the Easy Customizer when that is no longer used. Now, it still injects an empty tag for a no-longer existing menu, and – much worse – injects rules at the top of *my* CSS which make it impossible to use an @import rule in *my* CSS because this has to come at the very start – and cannot if you’re injecting stuff before that! Please don’t make my code invalid!

  23. June 29, 2012 at 4:08 am | #37

I thought it was too much at first because it appeared to “mainstreamed.” After a few moments throughout the day, I think I will be alright with the change. I have so much concerns with the editing process that I encounter from day to day, but I will eventually address these time consuming issues in the future.

    I love SM.

    God Bless you.

Hi, I would really like to actually see the stats per pic. In this new lay-out (which looks stunning btw) I can just see how many hits there’ve been, but not on which pictures. Who can help me?

    • June 29, 2012 at 4:49 am | #39

Barbara it is under the stat button…then click on on details. The actual total stats numbers is under the This month heading on the left. It is small…but its there. Hey Barbara check me out at GrateCreations.com.

      Have a Grate Day!

      God bless,

Here is a listing of the New “Account Settings” main headings.

Here is a quick sanity check/test of this new set up. Which one doesn’t fit?
    Choose the best/worse answer.

    Account Settings
    Me (my) Account Settings
    Privacy Account Settings
    Style Account Settings
    Discovery Account Settings
    Statistics Account Settings
    Business Account Settings

Is it not obvious that one of these doesn’t belong here? And other Pro users, isn’t this the item We use Most that is now – an additional click away and in a less intuitive place as judged by the test above. Of course we will remember where it is, but that doesn’t mean it makes sense.

    Alternative.
A “View” menu item under “Tools” in the menu bar and “The out of place item” (which I haven’t named would very logically fit underneath that View menu item and would be very logically and conveniently placed, putting the item that Pro Users use very very frequently one click away vs four clicks away.

The change works nicely and looks nice but its not logical and not more useful – from a less clicks for a very frequently used item.

f you don’t know what item I am hinting at then maybe I am wrong and alone in my opinion of this item being out of place, if you do weigh in identifying this out of place item maybe this will be re-evaluated.

Thank you Smugmug! I see you have taken the input and added the View Stats item to the Tools Menu (you clung to that extra click required by taking us to the “new account settings statistics page” vs straight to the statistics page but thats a compromise I think MAYBE we can all live with until you decide a View Menu item works better ;-) .

Good to know you guys listen and not only listen, but take action. Thank you! I say MAYBE because I can’t tell if we still have to “log in” again based on you taking us to that screen instead of the actual statistics. I was already logged in the “second time” when I first tried the new view stats item. If an additional log in is required because you take us to this page vs the actual stats, please don’t do that. You are on the 1 yard line of making this right, take it in the the End Zone Please (if you didn’t already). What does that mean – it means Don’t make us log in again to see Stats. Its ok to take us straight to what we are trying to get to – in other words “View stats” can go to the view Statistics page – No one will be confused by that. Again, thank you. I think this is better!

Smugmug – Please stop making us log in to see stats. I voiced concern shortly after this was implemented and after no change and giving it a chance it has proven – it is still a very non-value added, very irritating thing for such a commonly used feature. Please fix this. Having to log in for stats is an irritating daily reminder of something that just doesn’t make sense. You guys use the site – you have to know that this doesn’t make sense – Are you all ok with this??? Or are you all using some work around?

It has been proposed in the blog to bookmark the link in your browser direct to the statistics. If you all (as users) are using the “Bookmark” the statistics page to get around this, then that is just 100% confirmation that this doesn’t make sense (not that confirmation is needed). The fact that it is possible (via the bookmark method) to get directly to the statistics without logging in means, you shouldn’t have to log in to do so. Please make view statistics go directly to view statistics without having to log in. It literally should take a programmer 30 seconds to just change the link (say I am wrong and it takes them an hour its still nothing compared to the wasted time of 100′s/maybe 1000′s of us having to log in daily). Multiply the 20 seconds each of has had to spend logging in and the time we have spent logging in unnecessarily will far outweigh whatever time it takes the programmer to fix this (FYI – one little typo on your mobile device and logging in is not as quick as one might think). Please.

This is without a doubt the greatest current dis-satisfier on Smugmug for me and unfortunately I get reminder of it literally EVERY SINGLE DAY! Not a good thing as I doubt I am alone! Others please comment so that smugmug knows this remains a problem. Don’t let this fade into the sunset as if its not a problem.

      • August 27, 2012 at 11:25 am | #44

Mike, thanks for your continued feedback. We’re sorry that this has become the primary source of pain for you, and I’ve asked our Heroes about the temperature of the feedback we get every day about logging in the view Stats. You’re not alone, but I doubt anyone has gone into as much detail as you have. Thanks for taking the time to lay it all out, because we do read it all.

Thank you Smugmug! Thank you! I don’t know if a lot of people will take the time to respond to say thank you but I definitely am taking the time to do so for you all making this adjustment! Even if others don’t say thank you they will definitely appreciate (even if only sub-consciously) you all making this change for the “View Stats” menu item to go directly to the “Statistics” page, no longer requiring a log in because it was taking you to the account settings page. Thank you!

  27. June 29, 2012 at 7:44 am | #46

All in all, a fresher look. I do have to agree with Marjolein that the correct name for the pull down menu is “Control Panel” and not “Account Settings”. My real gripe with this change is that I am now forced to log into the system whenever I want to check stats. That was a quick thing to do previously but now I get hit with the login window which means that I have to go find my password again. That changed the “I’ll take a quick look at the site stats” task into something significantly longer. Maybe pull stats out of the “Account Settings” menu item so that we don’t have to login like we need to do if we are opening up Account Settings? I fully agree and want to have to login if I’m going to change account settings but checking stats is a different kind of task.

    • June 29, 2012 at 8:35 am | #47

OK, the more I think about this change, the more frustrating it has become to me. Getting up on my soapbox….

Thinking about how I use this function, I realized that greater than 99% of the time, I used two tabs on the old control panel: stats and sales history. For stats, I needed to click the mouse three times: click to start the browser, click on tools to select the control panel, click on stats. I’m now looking at the graph. And it was relatively mindless. If I remember correctly, getting to the sales history was a total of four relatively mindless clicks.

Now, things are much different. Click to start browser. Click on tools->account settings. So far so good. Suddenly, I am presented with the login in screen. Engage brain, take hand off of mouse, type stuff on keyboard. Actually, also find notebook with passwords and look it up before typing it into the login page. Login into system. Put hand back on mouse. Click on stats. Now click on photo view details. Ahhh, there is the graph.

My complaint about this is that you have taken a task that I probably did at least once a day and made it significantly more difficult. Nothing that I can’t do but you have made me think about something that, frankly, I shouldn’t have to think about. I do not believe it is a good user interface design to make the user have to think about doing a simple task. It might be better for your support people in that there might be less questions. But you have shifted the burden of using the system onto the user. And frankly, why do I need to log into my account to check either the stats or sales history? Account login should be reserved for things that change the look or function of the account.

Suggested change: Make the tools pull down menu item “Control Panel” On the control panel, have stats and account settings as the minimum set of things to choose. Account settings should challenge you with a login in page. The other things on the control panel should provide the information in an easy and mostly brain-on-autopilot way of using. This would include stats, probably sales history, I haven’t though about the other things yet but there might be others.

Make the things you do most of the time simple to do. Logging into an account does not fall into the “simple to do” category.

OK, I’ll step off my soapbox now. Thanks for listening….

      • June 29, 2012 at 8:41 am | #48

Opps, egg on my face. Please disregard my comment about the sales history. That one is easy to get to with simple clicks. I still think the stats should be as easy to access.

      • June 29, 2012 at 8:09 pm | #49

Re viewing your statistics: now you click on Tools -> View Stats (one line under Account Settings) – even faster than it used to be!

      • June 30, 2012 at 8:00 am | #50

Hi Rob, one thing you could easily do is bookmark this link https://secure.smugmug.com/homepage/stats/ which will make getting to your stats only one single click in your browser.

      • June 30, 2012 at 2:01 pm | #51

Thanks Andy, that is a useful workaround and I’ll use it. However, as a designer, I’m still curious about the decisions that were made about what was grouped where. It seems to me that the stats page and the sales history page are both the same kind of information. Neither of which should require the verify login prompt to access the information. I completely agree that the verify login prompt should happen for actual account settings modification. But not the other things. It seems strange that the statistics was associated with account settings while sales history was not. I don’t even need to do a verify login to create a gallery and upload photos. :-)

Thanks for everyone’s effort at SmugMug, I know that you only intend to make things better. I guess my point is that sometimes, if you are changing something that, frankly, wasn’t really broken, you really need to be careful that you don’t actually take a step backwards.

      • June 30, 2012 at 2:14 pm | #52

Hi Andy, a quick followup to your comment. Since a menu pick for “View Stats” was added to the “Tools” menu, why not have that menu pick use the link you posted instead of going to the verify login page? That would make my issue with accessing the stats info quickly on the site go away completely.

  28. June 29, 2012 at 8:25 am | #53

I love the site but am frustrated that, with all the categories available for gallery names, there is not one for “Rental” or “Property” or “Housing,” etc. I have a fully furnished corporate home, available to rent by visiting film crews, posted on this site with over 30 photos to look at yet the only term close to that gallerie is “Architecture.” I was told to make my access site very quick and easy to access (by local film commission) because there are many rental options available here and people won’t take more than a minute to try to access photos before just saying “forget it” and going to the next option. So in my “about me” profile, I have had to mention what the gallery is called (i.e., “architecture”) so they will know that is where they go to see the pics. Is there anyone out there that has the same problem?

    • June 29, 2012 at 12:19 pm | #54

Hi Diane, you can make custom Categories and call them anything you want. You don’t have the use the ones that are pre-loaded into the Categories list!

To do that, just open up your Account Settings > Style and click to manage your Categories. You’ll see an area where you can create your own custom Category.

Once you’ve created it, the new category will appear in all of your category drop-down lists, and you can assign any gallery to it.

Here’s a blog post we did a while back that describes this in more detail: http://smu.gs/ia33mg

  29. June 29, 2012 at 11:05 am | #55

So now, instead of one click to reach my control panel and two to see my stats, now I have to make 5 clicks. Brilliant! :/
Looks like the same is true for most of what you moved around. Way to go. :/

Like Thomas said, pretty much like the Supreme Court rulings that were made yesterday… remove liberty, insert additional effort that does not add any benefit at all.

How do I view my galleries without adding them to my homepage? I have no idea where they are now.

    • June 29, 2012 at 12:16 pm | #59

Hi Darcy, we’ve had some people write to us with a similar issue, when you hide the Categories box from your homepage. So we’ve just pushed a fix: If you look under the Style section in your Account Settings and you have the Galleries/Categories box hidden, you should see a drop down menu appear that will let you access those.

The drop down won’t appear if you leave things visible on your homepage. Hope this helps!

      • July 3, 2012 at 11:53 pm | #60

Uhh… This does not help AT ALL. Where is this “STYLE” section??? The changes you have made are SO AWFUL! I’m nothing but frustrated!!!

  32. June 29, 2012 at 12:48 pm | #61

    Well …

I am getting the distinct impression this was just dreamed up and implemented – without so much as a small test on real users. Seriously, from reading the reactions here I get the impression many things are *harder* now or tale more time and/or clicks that they did before.

Or, some features are ‘Pro’ features so you look under ‘Business’.
Really? Why don’t you call that ‘Pro’ then? That would at least be clear. I suspect you’re
replacing one multitude of support questions with a different equally-large multitude of _different_ support questions.

    Or:
“So we’ve just pushed a fix: If you look under the Style section in your Account Settings and you have the Galleries/Categories box hidden, you should see a drop down menu appear that will let you access those.”
Huh? Can you explain what Categories have to do with Style?

How is all this better? I think you are just hiding things in new places…
Seriously. Just read what you wrote!

  33. June 29, 2012 at 4:20 pm | #62

Love it! Easier to use! Thanks!!

  34. June 29, 2012 at 5:16 pm | #63

How about a link to the old interface till we get used to this interface? Would migrate and get used to the new interface at my own pace…

How do I manage Gallerys that I do not have links to. I use to go to account settings- Homepage

    • July 1, 2012 at 9:29 am | #65

Hi Jason, we’ve added a categories link to your Account Settings > Style area if you’ve hidden your homepage galleries box. You can click that to access them at any time. Hope this helps!

Well access to the statistics is still easy and fast (and no password required) under Tools -> View Stats. So overall I’m happy with the changes, they don’t seem to make life any harder! Good job :-)

    • June 29, 2012 at 8:18 pm | #67

I’m still presented with a Verify Login page when I click on the view stats menu item. A slightly quicker menu entry but not the desired result.

My instincts tell me this is easily resolved from where it is now. Instead of having the Tools – View Stats Menu item result in you going to the Statistics page directly, it is going to (the Account Setting page). The password is still sometimes required because its entering into the “Account settings” area). Have it go straight to the “Statistics” view, no password required…Millions of Happy Customers – a play on the tagline. Almost there Smugmug. Almost there. Lets do it!

  37. June 29, 2012 at 11:19 pm | #69

Why is ‘Easy Customizer’ in that Tools dropdown, but not the ‘Advanced Customizer’? Seems yet another way to hide things in new places. Good navigation starts with consistency.
(And Easy Customizer needs a ‘Reset’ button to UNDO it all and get rid of the injected code that gets in the way of actual customization. I regret I ever even tried it to see what it would do. :( )

‘Categories’ also definitely do not belong under ‘Style’. If you can’t find a better name for that, then that is a sign you did not get *your* categories right. ;) An old developers’ principle that was very true 20 years ago but still holds true.

Also: why does the type have to be so tiny and in such low contrast? Hurts my eyes to try and read it. I thought the idea was to increase usability, not ‘make it more stylish for young eyes only’?

    • July 1, 2012 at 9:23 am | #70

Hi Marjolein and thanks for the feedback! We’ve always linked the Easy Customizer from the homepage Tools button and not the Advanced Customization because it’s the easier way to make site changes. And don’t forget the “Start Over” button that should wipe away all of your changes.

      • July 4, 2012 at 1:39 am | #71

The ‘Easier way’ is much harder to get rid of – but what you’ve ‘always’ done was what you were trying to repair, wasn’t it? If you’ve always done that, then it’s always been inconsistent. At least put both ways to customize together – no reason not to do that!

“Start Over” is exactly what I do not want to do. I want to get rid of everything I’ve ever done in Easy Customizer because it interferes with using Advanced Customization – and never, ever touch it again. Maybe you should rename that button so it says what it actually does? There is *no clue* anywhere for how to get rid of *all* ‘Easy’ customizations.

      • July 4, 2012 at 2:43 am | #72

So. I tried the ‘Start Over’ button (which does seem to be geared towards starting over, and presents me with a confusing menu that I had read three times to find what I needed: the opposite of start over: stopping completely). A ‘Clear everything’ button would be much clearer!

While this did get rid of the injected CSS at the start of my CSS, it does NOT get rid of the injected HTML just before my custom header code:
        <div id=”customHeaderContainer”></div>
That was the wrapper for the ‘Easy’ customizer top menu but is no longer needed when the easy customizer is no longer used.

One thing I would really like to see is easier galleries and sub galleries set up. It seems backwards that you would have to set up a sub gallery with the name of the event (i.e Sarah and AJ wedding) and then the different facets of the event (Getting Ready, Ceremony etc) as a gallery???

Also, it would be great to be able to set a password for the main gallery (Sarah and AJ Wedding) and not have to set it for EVERY SINGLE SUB GALLERY! What a pain….

My suggestion would be the following example:
    Categories: Weddings, Couples, Babies etc….
    Gallery: Sara and AG Wedding
Sub-Gallery: Girls Prep, Guys Prep, Ceremony…..and on and on.

The way they are now is so backwards in my thinking….I have to retrain my brain each time to add a new clients photos because it’s so backwards in thinking….how could a subgallery be the main event and the folders within the main event be the gallery??? just confusing.

    • July 1, 2012 at 9:25 am | #74

Hi Melody and thanks for taking the time to write this all out and explain it better. This is really great feedback and I’ll be sure our product team sees this. Would you mind also adding this to our feedback forums here? http://feedback.smugmug.com/

      • July 2, 2012 at 11:54 am | #75

I agree with Melody. I simply didn’t get the knack of it nor have had the time to figure out to where I end up just making a gallery half the time and it is what is. Which is not what I want. I do wish it was explained better and simpler from the beginning when someone joins and starts. I’m not one to bug someone unless I’m at my wits end. I’d rather search out the answer myself especially when I hear I’m number 72 in line and have to wait for someone to be available. This happened recently when so many customers were having a hard time trying to purchase photos and I wanted to see if there’s a way smug mug can be more compatible for my customers. I know I myself can’t order through Internet Explorer and I did the whole cookies thing which I’m sure my customers find a hassle. I had to download google chrome and use that but not everyone is comfortable on the computer doing these things. I just wish there was a way to not hurt my business potential.

    • Julie
      July 9, 2012 at 7:54 am | #76

Amen! Every time I go back to upload new photos, I have to spend a lot of time reviewing what the relationship is between sub-galleries, galleries, and categories; reviewing examples; and trying to wrap my mind around it all. Melody’s suggestion is much more intuitive.

      • Deborah
        July 9, 2012 at 8:05 am | #77

I so agree! Sometimes it makes me feel so dumb. I think I get it and then I notice somehow it’s wrong. I wanted to get galleries/categories/subcategories ready because of an action shoot which goes for two different tournaments for two weeks long and I wanted to be prepared. I can’t get over how long it took me and I have a feeling it’s still not going to be the way I’d like it to be. I probably shouldn’t have wasted my day. On top of having to sign in every time I turned around! Don’t even get me started on trying to arrange/rename/delete galleries/categories/subcategories. Sometimes you’re in acct. settings and some things you can do on the gallery page, etc. etc. I do find a few things more helpful than before but I wish it was easier for them to make it easier for us to get around and do things. Even a clearer help description on somethings would be nice.

I have been complaining about this for years. Why they don’t allow for more than one folder inside of another folder is beyond me. The fact that my site has to be set up according to those rules is ridiculous. Hard to be faithful without that basic flexibility. If they don’t change, at some point other photo/vid browsers will catch up. (Or do I smell a sale of smugmug to a larger fish?)

This was a totally unnecessary change. If I could navigate around the old site what was stopping the newbees? More buttons to click on. Another smugmug nuisance. Get rid of the red thumbs on your popular galleries and you will have done something useful.

Who decided what colors were to be used? I find gray text on a darker gray background very difficult to read. White text on gray or black background or black text on a light/white background would be much better. Something with more contrast please. Also the text could be larger.

Perhaps a list of the top 10, 25 or 50 hit Photographs that can be displayed on the front page including the most popular gallery? This could be tailored to weekly, monthly or annually by the owner. Just a thought.

Hi Deborah and thanks for taking a moment to tell us how it’s been for you! We aren’t aware of any outstanding issues checking out via Internet Explorer, as IE is one of our supported browsers. It sounds like you may have been in touch with our Support Heroes but there’s a lot of us available 7 days a week and you — as well as your customers — are always welcome to chat with us or shoot us an email if you have trouble. Let us know if you’re still having problems! It’s absolutely our goal to make it painless and even enjoyable for people to browse and buy from your site.

I can’t find keyword section in the new control panel. Earlier, it used to be in Settings tab, I think. Am I missing something?

    • July 2, 2012 at 4:14 pm | #101

By the way, the new control panel looks pretty good. I just need my keyword section back where I can browse all keywords on one page.

      • July 3, 2012 at 11:58 am | #102

Update! Here’s some CSS you can use to display the keywords box on your homepage, and it will be visible only to you, as the logged-in owner:

        .notLoggedIn .homepage #keywordsBox {display: none;}

    • July 3, 2012 at 11:42 am | #103

Hi, I think you may be talking about the old “Homepage” tab that used to contain all the boxes that you weren’t displaying on your homepage? If you want to access your keywords you can choose to show it on your homepage now, or you can create a Find page with the keywords box on it like we show in our demo site: http://andydemo.smugmug.com/find

Here’s how to do that: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=69800

Hope this helps but if neither of those options work for you, please let our heroes know.

  55. July 2, 2012 at 4:43 pm | #104

The change is fine but I have always chosen the login method through Facebook and now it has to authenticate me EVERY TIME I go to my site to check stats or anything else. In the past, before the update, it would only authenticate me once and then only again if I actually logged out.

    Can we fix this?

  56. July 4, 2012 at 1:50 am | #105

    schmoo :
We aren’t aware of any outstanding issues checking out via Internet Explorer, as IE is one of our supported browsers.

If IE is one or your supported browsers then surely you are aware that – in a ‘galleries’ view ‘random’ images for galleries without a ‘featured’ image are not appearing at all in IE? (The descriptions are there, but not a single image representing the gallery.)

IE (from version 7) is certainly one of my supported browsers (I still see enough people using that when viewing my images) but I don’t think I can repair this on my end with scripting.

Hi, I think you may be talking about the old “Homepage” tab that used to contain all the boxes that you weren’t displaying on your homepage?

It takes longer to get into stats now (more steps), and along the way I get this annoying message that I made changes to something that didn’t get saved, even though I made no changes to anything. Then, when I back out of stats I’m taken to an advertisement for Smugmug instead of my homepage, as though I were just thinking of joining, instead of being a customer for years. Like the last big rollout that was trumpeted as being so great, this new format has more minuses than pluses. Then there’s still that incredibly annoying, big “Welcome Back” sign whenever you log on, like someone shouting in your face. Wish you would get rid of that already.

Just a criticism to editors, I can’t find in the previous as in the new something to justify text inside the box. Without justifing the page looks not so good and I would like to change it. Thanks

  63. July 9, 2012 at 9:57 pm | #113

I like the new interface. After years of having to search to find out what my settings are, this new interface presents them very clearly for the most common settings.

  64. July 15, 2012 at 4:09 pm | #114

How about changing the rest of the content and instructions – where you say “go to Control Panel to …” as in the message resetting my password. the term “control panel” no longer appears so the instructions are of no help.

    Otherwise, nice change.

YOU REMOVE THE CONTROL TAB AND DON’T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT HOW TO CREATE A CATAGORY FOR THE GALLERIES??? If your site wasn’t so backwards it would be alot easier to create a simple gallery with sub catagories inside with a simple right click and make a new folder. Instead you have to make catagories to put inside of a galleries and it’s all backwards! Now without the control tab you can’t do that and this supposed great new look is WORTHLESS TO ME!!! I just want something that works???

The new pricing scheme is a rip-off. Customers complain about the prints since SmugMug uses only SRGB which is a terrible color profile. $300 a year is too much to pay for poor quality. If I downgrade from PRO status to a more reasonably priced package, SmugMug immediately puts all my gallery photos up for sale for a few cents. That is criminal! Time to fire SmugMug Super Thieves.

    • October 1, 2012 at 11:29 am | #124

Hi, it’s very easy to disable printing in ALL of your galleries if you don’t want to sell your prints at-cost. Just open up any gallery’s Settings page, turn off the shopping cart and use the bulk change tool at the top to apply your changes across your entire site.

Hi! I am a little bit lost on the new site, I am trying to add the contact me tab to my website but the instructions are all under the old layout and I can’t make it work.

I need to update my customer contact email – instructions below

Go to Control Panel, Pros tab and find “Customer Contact Email”. For this feature to work, you must set an email address for this setting. You can use the same email address as your smugmug account or you can use a different email address, but something must be configured or the contact email feature will not work.

and can’t find it under the new look. I have the power package, is that the same as the Pro was?

    Thanks for your help!

    • February 1, 2013 at 4:04 pm | #128

Hi Nikki and it does look like we need to update that info you found. It’s really easy to change your contact email now: Just open your Account Settings and the first tab under the first section (Me > Profile) will have a field for your contact email at the very bottom. That’s it!

Would you mind sharing where the quoted instructions are so we can update it with the correct info?

      • February 1, 2013 at 4:56 pm | #129

Thanks so much for getting back to me promptly. If that option isn’t there where you have directed me, does that mean I have to upgrade my account from power to portfolio?

    • February 4, 2013 at 3:52 pm | #130

Hi Nikki, I took a swing by your Account Settings and it looks like you have a Contact Email field on your Portfolio account and it’s been filled in properly. Did you get everything settled? In short, both pro-level subscriptions, Portfolio and Business, should have access to this feature. Let us know if you still need any help! http://help.smugmug.com/
