For every person with a camera in their hands, there’s SmugMug. We help photographers like you share the power of your perspective. These are the stories of five photographers doing just that.

Through the camera lens, a photographer can change the way we see the world, and each other.

Woody Guthrie / Photography by Lester Balog

In the 1940s Woody Guthrie painted his guitar with the message “this machine kills fascists,” and created an indelible image that inspired a generation. While the statement itself was powerful, the photo and image captured made it revolutionary. Today, photographs still hold that power. The camera lens in the hands of a passionate photographer can challenge how we see the world.

We’re excited to share with the world This Lens — a new home for photographer stories on SmugMug. We invite you to learn about the driving passions of other photographers, and get inspired to share your own.

Because something inside you stirs when you see something you love through a camera lens. It’s your inner voice that wants to express itself by shining a light on a subject you care about. Those images have the power to show beauty where most see none. They can change public opinion, expose a hidden story, start a movement or show the humanity of everyday life.

Because not everyone can climb mountains, dive on coral reefs, or get to know every corner of a thriving city. But photographers do, and they come back with the kinds of images that tell stories, change hearts and minds, and show the world things they could only dream of. Photography helps people engage with places, ideas, and perspectives they might never get a chance to otherwise.

These are the stories of five photographers doing just that. And, SmugMug believes in the emotional power of these stories, and that by sharing them we can inspire others to pick up a camera and tell their story, too.

We invite everyone to share what your camera lens means to you on SmugMug, on our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Use the hashtag #ThisLens and tag us @SmugMug. Because to you, a photographer, the camera lens is more than a piece of glass. It’s a voice, a platform, a solution, a perspective, an emotion, and more.
